Maree Sugai obtained a masters in Applied Linguistics from Reading University, UK with a distinction in her thesis on Intercultural Communication. She has taught undergraduate and postgraduate students at Tohoku University School of Medicine, Tohoku Gakuin University and is a Associate Professor at Tohoku University of Community Service and Science. Her research area is in mental health and the way cultural expectations and differences can impact the specific way mental disorders present; focusing especially on the culture-bound isolation phenomenon of hikikomori. Maree has been a board governor for twelve years for Kokoroya rehabilitation center in Sendai for patients recovering from and suffering from mental health problems.
